Audulus 4.7 Introduces Pro Modules Series
By Jerry Smith, Creator of the J-23 Series
The journey toward the new Pro Modules series started with a simple conversation: "You know, what would be really cool…" In the process of creating the Pro Modules, there's been a real shift—from "I wonder if Audulus can do this..." to "not only can Audulus do this, but we're opening a door to very interesting, unexplored territory."
Audulus is a modular audio platform for iOS and desktop that lets users build custom synthesizers and effects. Its low-latency, high-quality audio engine works as both a standalone application and an AUv3 plugin inside DAWs.
I've been chipping away at algorithmic reverbs for years. I'm a post-punk, indie, heavy-effects electric guitar player—there's so much great gear that was out of my reach, and digital modular always offered a way to tinker and imagine the perfect effects rack.
The first Pro Module was the J-23 Space Console—a multi-effects module nodding to beloved retro rack gear from the 80s and 90s: Eventide, Lexicon, and others. It became the foundation of the Pro series, leading to the two smaller modules: J-23 Reverb and J-23 Effects.
Within Audulus's modulation ecosystem, these become supercharged—producing high-quality sound with remarkable range as modulation paths are added. The Space Console works particularly well as a centerpiece for guitar or drum effects.
Reverb design can be something of a dark art—so much listening, trial and error, and constant iteration. Comparisons are often from memory and experience, seeking the feel of spaces and great reverbs you've encountered along the way. You're chasing ghosts, really—the sense of a cathedral, the character of a vintage Lexicon plate, the way a spring tank colors your guitar signal.
I found tremendous inspiration in Sean Costello's work with Valhalla DSP. His generosity with resources and public-facing conversations about reverb design has been invaluable to the broader DSP community. Along with Costello's work, two other sources rise to the top, mostly for the creative ways these designers work within hardware limits: Tom Erbe and his work with Make Noise, and Keith Barr's Spin Semiconductor FV-1 effects chip, the source of many great guitar effects pedals from Chase Bliss and others.
The J-23 Space Console features 12 reverb algorithms and 10 effects, all designed in the spirit of a hardware unit with consistent parameter spaces. The reverbs include rooms, plates (including a Dattorro-inspired plate), halls, springs, a chamber, and abstract algorithms. The multi-effects suite includes echo, chorus, flanger, phaser, barber-pole flanger, vibrato, tremolo, and pitch shifting.
One of the Space Console's strengths is its semi-modular modulation matrix with two internal sources—an envelope follower and an LFO—plus external modulation input ports for every parameter. This allows for everything from classic gated reverb effects to complex evolving soundscapes where the reverb itself becomes an instrument.
All Pro Modules are modestly priced under $10 USD. The series is available now for iPadOS, macOS, and iPhone with Audulus 4.7.
The name "J-23" comes from my username on the Audulus forums—jersmi—and the year I began development: 2023 (though it took a bit longer than expected). Any connection to the 23 enigma is probably a coincidence… probably.
